Hopeless to Hopeful

Hope was not unlike the CMC in that she was desperate to get her cutie mark. Unfortunately, for Hope, it did not come when she was a filly. Try as she might, she couldn't find anything she felt she was good at (despite her friend's encouraging her otherwise). Bullied relentlessly for being a blank flank in her late fillyhood by constant taunts of "Hopeful? More like HopeLESS!" Hope decided that nobody cared and life was not worth living. She sat in her room, crying, with a knife in hoof, ready to end it all.

Then, suddenly, a voice called to her. She trotted to the window to find her best friend standing in her back yard, crying. Hope ran downstairs to her side.

"I... I didn't know who to go to... But Hope, you're such a good listener... I... I can't stand this anymore..."

Hope listened as her friend began to tell her how miserable she'd been lately. How her life just seemed to be falling apart and she didn't know how she was ever going to amount to anything in life. How worthless she felt. How nopony cared about her and how she just wanted to come by to say... Goodbye.

"Are you an idiot?!"

Hope's friend was aghast.

"How could you ever think that nobody cares! What about your family? Your friends? Our teacher? Your neighbors? ME?! I NEED YOU! You're the only pony in this life who cares about me! You're going to be an amazing pony someday, and I can't wait to see it."

Her friend started to cry. "Oh, Hope!" She fell into the filly's arms weeping.

In that moment, Hope had forgotten about her own sadness to help her friend. As she comforted her, Hope thought about her other friends. If they were struggling too. The stress they must be under. One had a recital coming up she'd promised to attend. Another had his entry test for Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns coming, and had begged Hope to help him study.

But wait... They'd asked Hope for help. They needed her.

Her thoughts turned to her younger sister. Who would be there to listen to her when she needed it? Who would teach her how to tie ribbons without magic or which swing went the highest on the playground? Who would be her big sister?

"Me..." She whispered.
"It... has to be me."

Hope realized in that darkest moment that she isn't hopeless. Ponies NEED her. Ponies DO care about her. And everyone is struggling in their own ways and nopony might even know. She wanted to help them. She needed to be there for them.

She hugged her friend tight. Hope closed her eyes, and a tear ran down her cheek. In a silent shimmer of light, a yellow ribbon appeared on her flank. And in the center, a semi-colon. A mark of a sentence that could have ended, but the author chose to continue it. Just like the story she chose to continue. Her own. And it was just beginning.

Lovely picture and touching story. Ah, I even teared up a little bit.
